What is God's Name?

Spoiler Alert: He is One

This is a longer than normal post. I feel the need to reach as many people as possible with this message and give as many verses as I can think of for evidence and not merely from my own thoughts. I pray eyes are opened through this study and that it might lead someone to follow after the Lord.

Have you ever had someone ask you what God’s name was? Or wondered about it yourself? What is the answer? Surely it is not just God.

Let’s dive in and discover who He is.

Deuteronomy 6:4, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:"

God is one Lord.

John 4:24, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."

God is a Spirit.

Isaiah 44:6, "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, And his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; And beside Me there is no God."

God is the Lord and King. God is the First and the Last. There is no other God.

Isaiah 43:10, "Ye are My witnesses, saith the LORD, And My servant whom I have chosen: That ye may know and believe me, And understand that I am He: Before Me there was no God formed, Neither shall there be after Me."

There was no God before the Lord, and there will not be one after Him.

Romans 1:3, "3 Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our LORD, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;"

Jesus is the Lord.

But didn’t it just say in the verses before that God was the Lord?

Matthew 1:23, "23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Jesus’ name was Emmanuel. God with us. Jesus was God with us.

Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

In this verse, Jesus asked Peter, “But whom say ye that I am?” As we see his response was “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Does that mean Jesus and God are separate? That would contradict so many verses if so. The Greek word for son here is “Hyiós”. But if we take a look at the word son in other verses not regarding Christ then we only find “teknon” used. Why is that, do you think?

Colossians 1:16-17, "16 For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: 17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist."

If you read the rest of this chapter you will see that this is speaking directly of Jesus. For by Jesus were all things created. All things were created by Jesus, and for Jesus. Jesus is our Creator.

John 1:1-14 1 IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. 12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Let’s recap over a couple of verses. “IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” “He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew him not.” “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” So God was the Word. God was in the world, God made the world, and the world didn’t know God. Then we see that the Word - God- was made flesh and walked the earth with us. That sounds like Jesus. Jesus was made flesh and walked this earth.

1 Timothy 3:16, "16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

Again, here we see God was made flesh. But it says He preached to the Gentiles and was received up into glory. Jesus did that.

Revelation 1:8, "8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."

God is the first and last, the Lord.

Isaiah 9:6, "6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon His shoulder: And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

If you have seen the home page of my blog you have read this verse. Why do I have it on there? Because after coming back to Jesus, I came across this verse. When I read it, it absolutely blew my mind. Such powerful words that reflect the true nature of Him. Jesus came to this earth for us. He is Wonderful, Counseller, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. Jesus is all that and more!

John 14:7-11, "7 If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also: and from henceforth ye know Him, and have seen Him. 8 Philip saith unto Him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me: or else believe Me for the very works’ sake.

Jesus said that if we know Him then we know the Father also. Philip then wanted Jesus to show the Father. Jesus’ response amazes me. He is like, “Phillip, don’t you know Me by now? I am right in front of you.”

John 10:30, "30 I and My Father are one."

Jesus and God are one. They are the same.

Isaiah 43:11, "11 I, even I, am the LORD; And beside Me there is no saviour."

God is the Lord and there in no other Saviour.

Luke 2:11, "11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

Jesus- our Saviour, the Christ, the Lord.

Romans 8:9-11, "9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you."

We see both “Spirit of God” and “Spirit of Christ” in verse 9. What is the Spirit? The Spirit is the Holy Ghost. When we have the Holy Ghost living inside us, we have Jesus living inside us because He is the Holy Ghost.

Through all my studying, praying, hearing preached Word, and listening - there is no doubt in my mind what God’s name is, nor who He is. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

To sum up from all the verses above, Jesus is:

The LORD

Spirit

King

First and the Last

Emmanuel

Son

Creator

Light

Word

Alpha and Omega

Beginning and the ending

The Almighty

Wonderful

Counseller

The mighty God

The everlasting Father

The Prince of Peace

Holy Ghost

Saviour

The Christ

Jesus is all that and more. If you need a comforter, He is the Comforter. If you need a saviour, He is the Saviour. He is the supplier of our every need. Our Creator. Jesus is.
